Maxim Integrated recommends following a star-grounding scheme, keeping the digital and analog grounds separate, and using a solid ground plane to minimize noise. Additionally, keep the input and output traces short and away from each other to prevent crosstalk.
The DS1804-010 requires a single 3.3V or 5V power supply. Ensure that the power supply is clean and well-regulated. Power sequencing is not critical, but it is recommended to power up the device after the power supply has stabilized.
The maximum capacitance that can be connected to the digital potentiometer's wiper terminal is 100nF. Exceeding this value may cause instability or oscillations in the device.
The DS1804-010 does not have built-in non-volatile memory. However, you can use an external EEPROM or flash memory to store the wiper position and recall it during power-up. Maxim Integrated provides an application note (AN1896) that describes a non-volatile memory solution using an external EEPROM.
To daisy-chain multiple DS1804-010 devices, connect the SCL and SDA lines in series, and use a separate CS line for each device. Ensure that each device has a unique address by setting the A0 and A1 pins accordingly.
